Guidelines for vehicle return

Badges & Decals
All original manufacturers badges & decals, which were present when the initial rental agreement began, should be undamaged and in place when the vehicle is returned to Terminus Contract Hire. Any sign-writing or transfers should have been removed with no damage to paintwork, before returning the vehicle(s).

Acceptable return criteria as follows

Paintwork:

  • Up to 4 minor stone chips per panel, provided there is no visible rust.
  • Scratches where the metal is not exposed and/or rusty and which can be polished out.
  • Touch in repairs, provided there is reasonable colour match and not easily visible from the standard viewing angles – see bottom of document.
  • Light scratches around door apertures, keyholes and fuel filler caps.

Dents:
Minor body dents from Fair Wear & Tear provided that;
i)They are less than 30mm in diameter.
ii)There are no more than 4 dents per panel.
iii) They have not caused paint cracking or flaking.

Bumper Sections and Rubbing Strips:

  • Scratches and/ or abrasions to painted bumpers and side rubbing strips provided they do not penetrate through to the base material and;
  • are less than 100mm in length.
  • There should be no more than 2 per vehicle.
  • One dent per bumper and one dent per rubbing strip if;
  • they are less than 30mm in diameter.

Controls

  • All original controls, instrumentation and accessories must be intact and operate correctly.
  • Any necessary replacements due to, e.g., theft, should have been fitted with equipment of a similar value and specification.
  • Odometer alterations must be recorded and any evidence of unauthorised odometer changes is unacceptable.

Window Glass & Lamp Lenses

  • Stone chips to windscreens less than 2mm in size, providing they do not obscure the drivers line of vision and/ or;
  • there are not more than 3 chips on the windscreen.

NB: Cracks or chips within the drivers sight line would require windscreen repair/ replacement in line with current MOT legislation before returning the vehicle.

Tyres

  • All tyres should have a minimum tread depth corresponding to current legislation and be free of damage.
  • The tread should show no uneven wear through under or over inflation, or wheel misalignment.
  • The spare tyre should be in place and meet the above standard.

Wheels and Wheel Trims

  • Minor scuffing due to everyday use.
  • Missing or cracked trims must be replaced.
  • Damage to alloy wheels must be removable by specialist polishing.
  • Rim damage up to the point of flange distortion extending to no more than 25mm.

Interior Trim

  • The interior should be clean and tidy with no visible burns, tears or permanent seat, headlining or carpet stains.
  • Wear and soiling through normal use.

Luggage Area

  • Surface scoring and light blemishes reflecting normal use.

Unacceptable return criteria as follows

Paintwork:

  • Scratches to paintwork exceeding 100mm in length or more than 4 per vehicle.
  • Colour mismatch between panels
  • Penetration marks.
  • Visible over spray.
  • Dirt in the paint.

Dents

  • Previous repair damage which is noticeable under normal scrutiny.
  • Body panel misalignment.

Controls

  • Any evidence of unauthorised odometer changes is not acceptable.

Window Glass & Lamp Lenses

  • Poor previous repairs or chips showing signs of crack development which are visible from a distance of 1 metre are unacceptable.
  • Lamp lenses with chips or cracks.

Tyres

  • Any replacement tyres fitted must be of an equivalent specification to the original equipment.

Wheels and Wheel Trims

  • Major rim damage, or multiple damage to a single rim.

Luggage Area

  • Floor coverings and surrounding trim panels which are torn or split.

Regulations for viewing angles
Bodywork must be viewed from a standard viewing angle:

  • 2 metres at 90 degrees from the vehicle and/ or;
  • from an angle of 45 degrees each way (see figure below).
  • Dent or paintwork defects deemed unacceptable must be visible from the standard viewing angle.
  • Unacceptable defects visible from this view described, are defined in the acceptable and unacceptable return criteria(s) for Paintwork and Dents, above.
