This sporting event is held every 4 years and is often referred to as the Friendly games. It is a multi-sport event that invites athletes from the Commonwealth Nations to participate. It first began in 1930 and was created to unite the families of the Commonwealth with sporting festivities.
The Commonwealth games have grown from featuring only 11 countries and 400 athletes to a global display of 4,600 sportsmen and women from across 72 nations and territories.
Formerly the British Commonwealth, it is a coalition of 56-member humanitarian countries all working to achieve a common goal. The Commonwealth compasses larger beautiful countries to breath-taking small states. The 54 countries:
For each country their reasoning for the importance of the Commonwealth with vary, for the continent of Africa the Commonweath for them offers amplification of their voice and many African nations. It provides them with the ability to lobby larger donors and diplomatic countries such as Canada and the UK.
Within the UK the Commonwealth Secretariat enables them to promote and advocate democratic principles, human right and offer economic development support. It allows the UK Government to provide a voice from some of the smallest and remote sovereign states.
